Slavonian grebe  Podiceps auritus

The Slavonian or Horned Grebe is a very rare breeding bird in Britain, found mainly at Loch Ruthven near Inverness from where these photographs were taken.  Only 70 pairs breed each year, a number almost never bettered since 1908 when they were first recorded in the UK.
